How to buy e-books and digital guides safely

Before you buy an e-book or digital guide from an individual seller, check these points.

What to verify

Start with the content:

• Ask for the table of contents.
• Ask for a sample chapter.
• Check the page count matches the listing.
• Make sure it isn't freely available online.

Then the format:

• Is it PDF, EPUB, MOBI or all three?
• Is it DRM-free, so you can actually use it?
• Can you print it?

Then the license:

• Is it for personal use only, or commercial use too?
• Can you resell or redistribute it?
• Does it include PLR (private label rights)?

And originality:

• Is it original work, or plagiarized?
• Watch for Creative Commons or public-domain material sold as original.

Pricing

Prices depend on length, depth and the rights included. Compare what similar titles sell for, and expect PLR, resale rights or a custom-written book to cost more than a personal-use copy.
