How to transfer a Telegram channel to a new owner

In short: use Telegram's built-in Transfer Channel Ownership option. The owner needs two-step verification switched on for at least 7 days and a login on that device that's more than 24 hours old. For a paid sale, check the channel's history and stats first, and keep the payment in escrow until the transfer is done and the old owner is no longer an admin.

How a Telegram channel transfer differs from a Discord server

Like a Discord server, a Telegram channel has a built-in way to change owners: Transfer Channel Ownership, in the admin settings. The difference is the safeguards. Telegram asks for the owner's two-step verification password, and blocks the transfer if that password was set up less than 7 days ago or the owner logged in on that device less than 24 hours ago. The old owner also stays on as an admin until someone removes them. If the owner's whole account is being sold with the channel, that's an account sale (see the tdata section below).

What Telegram tdata is and how to use it

Telegram tdata is the folder (usually named tdata) where Telegram Desktop keeps its session files, including the authorization keys and local cache. Copy it to another computer and you're logged in to the same account without a phone number or SMS code. It's common in account sales but fragile: the session stops working if it's ended from another device or if Telegram detects unusual activity.

To move a tdata session:

  1. Close Telegram Desktop completely.
  2. Find the tdata folder. On Windows it's usually at C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\Telegram Desktop\tdata.
  3. Copy the whole folder to a USB drive or other storage. Treat it like a password, because anyone with the folder has the account.
  4. On the new computer, install Telegram Desktop, close it, and replace its tdata folder with the copy.
  5. Open Telegram Desktop. You should be logged in as the original account.

tdata alone doesn't transfer a channel. The channel stays with the account, and a seller who kept the phone number or another session can get back in. After a tdata handover, change the phone number, set your own two-step verification password and end every other session before you confirm. A session less than 24 hours old can't end other sessions, so if you logged in fresh, you may have to wait.

How to transfer a Telegram channel, step by step

Step 1: Prepare the channel

  • The seller has to be the channel's creator (owner). If the channel has several admins, the owner is the one who transfers it.
  • The owner's two-step verification must have been on for at least 7 days, and their login on the device they'll use must be more than 24 hours old. Sort this out before the sale.
  • Check that the channel has no bans or restrictions. Telegram can restrict channels that broke its rules.

Step 2: Add the buyer as an admin

  1. Open the channel in Telegram.
  2. Tap the channel name to open the channel info.
  3. Tap Edit (Manage Channel on desktop), then Administrators.
  4. Tap Add Admin.
  5. Select the buyer's account.
  6. Switch on all the admin rights, including Add New Admins.
  7. Save.

Step 3: The buyer checks their access

  • The channel should now list the buyer as an admin.
  • The buyer can test this by editing the channel description or publishing a post.
  • The buyer should also check that they can add and remove admins.

Step 4: Transfer ownership and remove the old owner

  • The seller opens Administrators again, selects the buyer and scrolls down to Transfer Channel Ownership.
  • Telegram shows a warning and asks for the seller's two-step verification password. Once it's entered, the buyer owns the channel.
  • The old owner is still an admin at this point. The buyer removes them from Administrators, or the seller leaves.

Step 5: Change the settings that matter

  • The buyer should check the channel's linked discussion group, the username (if it wasn't part of the deal) and the profile picture straight away.
  • The buyer should turn on two-step verification on their own account, if it isn't on already, so nobody can take the channel from them.

Why you shouldn't use a bot to transfer a channel

Some sellers suggest a "transfer bot": you make it an admin, and it adds the buyer and removes the seller. Don't. No bot can transfer ownership, because that needs the owner's two-step verification password, and a bot you make an admin can do anything its rights allow, including deleting posts. If anyone asks for your two-step verification password or a login code "for the bot", stop. Do the transfer by hand with the steps above, with both sides in the deal chat.

Is buying a Telegram channel safe?

It can be, if you check the channel properly and keep the money in escrow. Telegram's Terms of Service don't mention selling channels. The main risks are:

  • The seller takes the channel back through the original account, because they kept the phone number, a session or admin rights.
  • The stats are fake: bought subscribers, views or engagement.
  • The channel's history includes banned content that could get it restricted.
  • The channel belongs to a compromised account that could be deleted.

How to check a channel before buying

  1. Check the seller's account age. Telegram doesn't show it, but some third-party bots estimate it from the account's numeric ID. Be careful with very new accounts.
  2. Ask for a screen-share call where the seller shows the channel's admin panel, subscriber numbers and post statistics.
  3. Check subscriber quality. On the call, ask the seller to scroll through the subscriber list: real people tend to have profile pictures, usernames and recent activity.
  4. Read back through the posts to see whether the content is consistent and not spammy.
  5. If the whole account is being sold, you'll get its tdata or login, but having a working session doesn't prove the seller is the original owner.

How to work out what a Telegram channel is worth

The price comes down to the niche, the number of subscribers, engagement and how the channel makes money. Things to weigh:

  • Subscriber count matters, but only if the subscribers are real and active.
  • Engagement rate is average views per post divided by subscribers. There's no universal benchmark, so compare it with similar channels.
  • Some niches sell ads for more than others, so two channels of the same size can be worth very different amounts.
  • Paid subscriptions, sponsored posts or referral income all add to the price, if the seller can show them.
  • A short, memorable username adds to the price.
  • An older channel with a steady post history is easier to judge than one that appeared last month.

To price a channel, compare it with similar listings on marketplaces. A channel priced far below comparable ones usually has a problem the seller hasn't mentioned.

Tips for selling a Telegram channel

If you're the seller, these habits prevent most disputes:

  • Show real stats live. Screenshots can be edited.
  • Sell through a marketplace with escrow, like EPICSWP, so the payment is held until the buyer confirms the transfer.
  • Tidy the channel first: delete spam posts, remove inactive admins and make sure it isn't restricted.
  • Be prepared to prove you own it. Show the admin panel live, or post a unique code the buyer gives you.
  • Price it fairly using the points above, and expect some negotiation.

How escrow works for Telegram channel sales

Escrow holds the buyer's payment until the transfer is done and checked. On EPICSWP it goes like this:

  1. The seller lists the channel with its details and a price.
  2. The buyer agrees and pays, and EPICSWP holds the money.
  3. The seller transfers the channel using the steps above.
  4. The buyer checks the transfer, removes the old owner and confirms receipt. The money is then released to the seller.
  5. If something goes wrong, either side can open a dispute before the buyer confirms. A moderator reviews the deal chat and the evidence and decides.

That removes the two classic risks: paying and getting nothing, or handing over a channel and not getting paid. EPICSWP explains the deal steps on its how it works page and answers common questions in the FAQ. The blog has guides for buying and selling on other platforms.

Telegram Premium for channel owners

You don't need Telegram Premium to own a channel, though it adds a few things that help when you run one:

  • faster downloads, and uploads of up to 4 GB, which helps media-heavy channels
  • voice-to-text and extra chat management tools
  • a Premium badge on the account
  • no sponsored messages in the app
  • higher limits on how many channels and groups you can join

Premium belongs to the account that pays for it and doesn't move with the channel, so it shouldn't affect the price.

Setting up a bot to manage a channel

Bots are handy for moderation and scheduled posts. To set up a basic one:

  1. Open a chat with @BotFather in Telegram.
  2. Send /newbot and follow the prompts to choose a name and a username.
  3. Copy the API token it gives you, and keep it private.
  4. Add the bot to your channel as an admin, with only the rights it needs.
  5. Connect the token to a posting script or a scheduling service.

In a sale, a bot can log when subscribers join and leave, which helps show the activity is real. Bots keep their admin rights after a transfer, so the buyer should remove any they don't control.

Crypto channels: a special case

Crypto channels come up often in Telegram sales because of the ad money in that niche. They also carry extra risks:

  • A channel that promoted scam tokens in the past may be flagged or reported.
  • Crypto advertising is restricted in some countries.
  • Crypto channels are often padded with bot subscribers.

Check the links in old promotions against the projects' official sites, and don't take the seller's word that they were legitimate.

Why Telegram account age matters

Account age is a trust signal, even though Telegram doesn't display it. An account with a long history and a stable phone number is less likely to be a throwaway made for one sale. If you're selling and your account is new, turn on two-step verification early, because Telegram won't let you transfer a channel until it has been on for 7 days.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer a Telegram channel without giving the buyer my phone number?

Yes. Transfer Channel Ownership moves the channel to the buyer's own account, and the buyer never needs your number or your password. It's different if you're selling the whole account with the channel on it. Then you hand over the account's login (its tdata, for example), and the buyer changes the phone number to their own.

What if the seller transfers the channel before the buyer pays?

Then the seller has nothing to fall back on if the buyer doesn't pay, which is why the order matters. With escrow, the buyer pays first and the money is held, the seller transfers, and the money is released when the buyer confirms. If the buyer won't confirm after a completed transfer, the seller can open a dispute.

Is it safe to buy a Telegram channel online?

It's far safer with escrow and a proper check of the stats and history. Never pay a seller directly: once a direct payment has gone, you usually can't get it back.

How do I check if a Telegram channel has fake members?

Look at the channel's built-in statistics, if it has them, to see how subscribers grew over time. A sudden jump followed by a flat line often means bought subscribers. Third-party analytics bots can also estimate how many subscribers are real.

What is the best way to sell a Telegram channel for a good price?

List it on a marketplace with a clear description, real stats and a fair price. Explain the niche and how the channel earns money, and use escrow so buyers feel safe paying.
