What Telegram TData is and how to transfer a channel safely

In short: TData is the folder where Telegram Desktop keeps your login session, settings and cached files on your computer. You can use it to back up a session or move it to another computer, but it doesn't transfer a channel. To buy or sell a channel safely, use Telegram's Transfer Channel Ownership option and pay through escrow.

Understanding Telegram TData

TData is a folder created by Telegram Desktop, the official desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux. Besides your session, it holds settings and cached media. When you log in on a new device, Telegram normally asks for your phone number and a login code, then syncs your chats from its cloud. Copying TData moves a session that's already logged in, so you skip that step.

Where to find TData

  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Telegram Desktop\tdata
  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Telegram Desktop/tdata
  • Linux: ~/.local/share/TelegramDesktop/tdata

The macOS path is for Telegram Desktop. The separate Telegram app for macOS stores its data elsewhere and has no tdata folder.

What's inside TData

  • encrypted session files that tie this computer to your Telegram account
  • subfolders such as user_data and dumps
  • a cache of the media and stickers you've opened, which you can limit under Manage local storage in Telegram Desktop's advanced settings

How to use Telegram TData

  1. Close Telegram Desktop completely.
  2. Copy the whole tdata folder to a USB drive or cloud storage.
  3. On the new computer, install Telegram Desktop, run it once, then close it.
  4. Replace the newly created tdata folder with your copy.
  5. Open Telegram Desktop. You should be logged in without a code.

This works only while the session is still valid. If it has been ended from another device, or is too old, Telegram will ask you to log in again. Anyone who gets a copy of the folder can open your account, so store it as carefully as a password.

TData vs. channel ownership

Many sellers think handing over the TData folder transfers a Telegram channel. It doesn't. TData gives the buyer access to the account on one computer, while whoever controls the account's phone number keeps control and can end that session at any time. A channel belongs to its owner's account, not to a folder.

To transfer a channel properly, the owner uses Telegram's Transfer Channel Ownership option. Both sides have to cooperate, and Telegram adds a few security checks.

How to transfer a Telegram channel safely

Step 1: Prepare the channel

  • Finish or cancel any paid promotions the buyer isn't taking over.
  • Take screenshots of the subscriber count and recent post views for your records.
  • Tell the buyer about any bots that are admins in the channel, and remove the ones they don't want.

Step 2: Add the buyer as an administrator

  1. Open the channel's settings and go to Administrators.
  2. Tap Add Admin and choose the buyer's Telegram account.
  3. Switch on every admin right, including adding new admins.
  4. Save the changes.

Step 3: Transfer ownership

Telegram has a built-in option for this. Once the buyer is an admin with every right switched on, the seller opens the buyer's admin settings, taps Transfer Channel Ownership and enters their two-step verification password.

Telegram blocks the transfer if the seller set up two-step verification less than 7 days ago, or if the seller's login on that device is less than 24 hours old. A seller who doesn't use two-step verification yet should turn it on well before the sale.

After the transfer, the old owner stays on as an admin until the new owner removes them.

Step 4: Check the transfer

  • The buyer should now appear as the owner in the Administrators list.
  • The new owner removes the old owner's admin rights.
  • Ask the buyer to post a message to show they're in control. They can then change the channel username and description.

On EPICSWP, this is the point where the buyer confirms receipt and the seller gets paid.

Is buying a Telegram channel safe?

It can be, if you follow a set process and use escrow. The main risks are:

  • A seller takes the payment and never hands over the channel.
  • A buyer who paid the seller directly by card or PayPal reverses the payment after getting the channel.
  • The original owner takes back the account behind the channel, using its phone number or the recovery email for its two-step verification password. This only matters if you bought the account itself. Once ownership has moved to your own account, the seller's account no longer controls the channel.

Escrow on EPICSWP is built for the first two. Nobody pays the other side directly: the buyer's money is held from the moment they pay, and it goes to the seller only when the buyer confirms they have the channel, or when a moderator decides a dispute.

How to price a Telegram channel

Pricing a channel isn't an exact science, but buyers and sellers look at the same things:

  • Engagement counts for more than size. A channel with 10,000 active readers is worth more than one with 100,000 who never open a post.
  • Some niches, such as finance and trading, attract more advertisers, so paid posts in them sell for more.
  • An older channel with a steady posting history is easier to judge, because you can scroll back and see how it grew.
  • Existing ad deals or a paid subscriber base add to the price.
  • If the sale includes the owner's account itself, an older account with normal activity is a safer buy.

Sellers should be realistic. Back up your price with views per post as well as the subscriber count.

Selling a Telegram channel

If you're selling, you want a good price without taking on risk:

  1. Clean up the channel. Remove spam, dead bots and anything that breaks Telegram's terms.
  2. Document the numbers with screenshots of subscriber growth, post views and engagement.
  3. Set a fair price by comparing similar channels in your niche.
  4. Use escrow, so you can see the buyer's money is held before you hand anything over.
  5. Transfer ownership only after the payment is held in escrow.

Telegram Premium: why buyers care

Telegram Premium is a paid subscription with extra features. It matters if you're buying an account to run a channel:

  • uploads of up to 4 GB per file
  • faster downloads
  • extra stickers and reactions
  • a Premium badge on the profile
  • no sponsored messages in public channels

Premium is a subscription, so ask who pays for it and when it renews. If the seller stops paying, it ends with the current period. An account with Premium active can still be a selling point.

Setting up a bot to manage your channel

After buying a channel, you may want a bot to handle moderation, posting or paid subscriptions:

  1. Open a chat with @BotFather in Telegram.
  2. Send /newbot and follow the prompts to name your bot.
  3. Copy the API token and keep it private.
  4. Add the bot to your channel as an administrator.
  5. Set up its commands with a library such as python-telegram-bot, or with a no-code bot builder.

Channels that check new members, send out alerts or manage paid subscriptions usually rely on a bot like this.

Crypto Telegram channels: extra checks

Crypto channels are a popular category. They often have active audiences and earn from paid signal subscriptions or sponsored posts, but they also attract scammers and the attention of regulators. When buying one:

  • Check the channel's history for deleted posts or sudden jumps in subscribers.
  • Search for reports calling the channel a scam.
  • Make sure the seller is the original owner, not a reseller who might disappear.

Keep the whole deal in escrow on a marketplace that handles digital assets, such as EPICSWP.

Telegram account age

Older Telegram accounts are less likely to be flagged as bots. If you're buying an account to run a channel, one that's at least a few months old with normal activity is a safer choice. Sellers should be open about the account's age and history.

Frequently asked questions

Is TData the same as owning the Telegram account?

No. TData is a local session. It lets you use the account on that computer, but the original owner can end the session remotely, or log in on another device and take back control. Full control means controlling the account's phone number and its two-step verification password.

Can I transfer a Telegram channel using TData?

No. TData carries session data, not channel ownership. The owner has to use Transfer Channel Ownership, and the new owner then removes the old one as an admin.

How do I know if a Telegram channel is worth buying?

Look at subscribers, views per post, demand in the niche, how the channel makes money and how old it is. Analytics tools such as Telemetr and Combot help.

What is the safest way to pay for a Telegram channel?

Pay through escrow with one of the payment methods offered at checkout. Don't send money straight to the seller by any method, because once it's sent there's nothing holding it while you check the channel.

Do I need Telegram Premium to run a channel?

No. Premium adds bigger uploads and faster downloads, but anyone can create and run a channel for free.
